Arugam bay is considered the best surfing beach in Sri Lanka by many surfers. Locally known as “Arugam Kudah”, it is a historical settlement in Sri Lanka’s southeast coast. The beach itself is a wonderful place with high waves for surfing, or calm and quiet ones lapping at your feet at times for a good swim; other attractions include the “Muhudu Maha Viharaya”, Elephant Rock – a superb vantage point to see all of Arugam bay- and a great surfing area, and the Lagoons – Urani or Kottukal – with wildlife such as crocodiles and elephants. Surfers choose one of many for their game – peanut farm, baby point or elephant point beaches. June to August is the high season in Arugam bay.
